Miranda July's latest (Me, and You, and Everyone We Know, 2005), is the story of a 5 year live-in relationship between July's character and her boyfriend, played by Hamish Linklater (The New Adventures of Old Christine). You might find it slow to unfold and get going and then almost pointless, but the pace grew on me and each scene built into something surprising and impossible to easily categorize. This film is by far bleaker than her first full length film, which I recall liking for its subtlety deft handling of small moments and gestures between people. It was also pretty dang full of hope where this film seems full of despair and imminent heartbreak.
Refreshing though to have an adult film offered at this time of year which for some can also seem pretty dang bleak.
Oh, and fair notice: moderately realistic, yet surreal scenes between humans, are counter-balanced by smaller scenes of narration from Paw-Paw, signaling I'm not sure what, but it all adds up to an affecting and emotional film, although some might still find it a bit too arty. Screw 'em. It's still summer here in Tucson and it's a freakin' relief not to watch one more super-hero vanquish the nazis in 3-D. Is it award's season soon? Really need a dose of serious, artfully made and written films to counter the avalanche of sugary, empty-caloried films I've indulged in this summer.
