Well, nothing can really beat the first season, everything was so new, I tended to laugh out loud several times an episode due to the masterful use of language and innuendo and double entendre and the like.
This is the season that see the true evil of Cy Tolliver, the death of the two con artists, and most especially horrid, the murder of the 3 prostitutes by the wack-a-doodle Wollcot. Very close to more violence than a stomach can hold. Ah yes, and not to mention the death of Bullock's nephew/son. More tragedy and body burying than seems humanly possible. Beyond that, ends with a wedding, a new bank and yet another type of evil: George Hearst. E.B. gets bought out and rolls, cochroach like, in the middle of his money, Wu enlists help to kill the new china man from San Francisco and it becomes clear that politics and the shenanigans of power brokering are becoming a bigger story than the relationships in the camp. Too odd to watch Bullock convince his brother's wife to stay in town when he should have done the right thing, allowed her to leave and of course taken up with Alma and their child to be. Argh. Milch just hates romance I think.
