Terry Gilliam directs Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell in another jumble of fantasy and story, straight from the brain of Gilliam. I have to recommend it because the cast does a great job and there are some wonderfully fanciful sets and lands that the characters find themselves in, but with the warning that, if you're looking for real, literal sense-making, best go knocking on some other film's door. I could translate the story into a simple homely about storytelling and the magic of the imagination and it's healing and saving and destructive powers, and it might be in there and it might not. It's also a tad slow to start. We get a bit of a long setup with Plummer and his daughter and a band of perfectly fit misfits and then they come across Heath Ledger and their world(s) are never the same again. See it in the theater if this sounds like your cupa. It's easy to imagine this in 3D, but oh well. A little fun and a little closer to being a great Gilliam film. Maybe next time.
Yep, you've expressed what I felt, Cheryl. The usual great performance by Christopher Plummer adds a lot, but right, if you just let yourself have fun with this and appreciate the idea of the value of imagination, this movie is worth your time.
